Studding Tips What is traction?
Traction in snowmobiling is the reduction of track slippage. As the engine
transfers power to the track, the track digs into the surface to push the
sled forward. If the track slips, some of the engine's power is lost.
Studs bite into the surface to keep the track from slipping, and prevent
lost engine power. Lost engine power is poor fuel economy. Track slippage
also occurs during breaking; Better traction means better braking.
General Studding Patterns
Studs placed where pressure (and weight) is concentrated work better.
Pressure is concentrated near the outside edge of the track on turns and
on the center of the track when going straight. Studs, to improve turning,
should be placed on the outside edge of the track; acceleration studs on
the center. Studs benefit from any additional support available. Place
studs within the cleat and over the belt on a cleated track. Place studs
against the cross ribs on a rubber track. |
