Race tracks were snow covered in the 60's. Ski-Doo filed for their carbide wear bar patent in 1971.!!! Woody's first carbide came out in 1975.

Using their knowledge of carbide wear characteristics and by developing a process to attach the carbide to a metal base they developed the first pair of carbide runners and delivered them to local racer, Dana Wiltse."

Surprising, how far out of the loop they were even then!!! They still refer to their bars as skags, Even though the word was/is spelled "SKEGS." The marine companies that made snowmobiles used a nautical word - skegs
